Classic Album Spotlight: “From Under the Cork Tree”

When I turned 12-years old, my dad bought me a CD that would become my first ever pop punk album that I would listen to. I immediately fell in love with it. I listened to this album for a year straight and it is when I started checking out other bands in the pop punk genre.

“From Under the Cork Tree” is the second studio album by pop punk legends, Fall Out Boy. It was released on May 3rd, 2005. Fall Out Boy formed near Chicago, Illinois, in 2001.

When it came time to record their second album, the band faced a major setback in February 2005. Pete Wentz, the bassist and lyricist of the band, faced a lot of anxieties about making a second record that led to a suicide attempt. After undergoing therapy, he rejoined the band and headed to California to record “From Under the Cork Tree.”

Patrick Stump, the lead guitarist and vocalist, composed all the music and Wentz wrote all of the songs. Wentz told “The Independent” that the lyrics were about “the anxiety and depression that goes along with looking at your own life.” It is why this album is still one of my favorites to this day. I can listen to it when I am feeling down and know that I am not the only one to feel that way.

“From Under the Cork Tree” was the band’s breakthrough mainstream success. It is their longest charting and best-selling album. “Sugar, We’re Going Down” was the single that lead the album, followed by “Dance, Dance.” Rolling Stone magazine deemed it one of the “40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time.”

Here are my top five favorite songs “From Under the Cork Tree:”

  1. “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More “Touch Me”’
  2. “Sophomore Slump Or Comeback Of The Year”
  3. “Sugar, We’re Going Down”
  4. “Of All The Gin Joints In All The World”
  5. “I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me”

It is an essential, must listen pop punk album. It was the album that made me fall in love with this genre of music and I will always be thankful.

Band Spotlight: Amongst Thieves

When starting this blog, my whole intention and goal was to discover new bands. I want to spotlight new bands and help give them some type of exposure. The first band we are spotlighting is one called Amongst Thieves.

Josh Nash, the lead singer of the band, contacted me on twitter and I thought I would give them a listen. I really enjoyed their sound and they reminded me of one of my favorites, A Day to Remember.

Amongst Thieves is a post hardcore band resigning in the United Kingdom. The band comprises of Josh Nash, Alex Morgan (guitar), James Thurlby (bass), Alex Morgan (guitar) and Andy Ackroyd (drums). They were established on July 23rd in 2013.

After two successful EP’s, “Revise. Reform.” and “March For The Sun,” the band released their self-titled album in 2017. They were then featured in the Slam Dunk Festival’s lineup and was featured in Rocksound, a British magazine covering rock music.

If you like bands in the post hardcore genre, like ADTR and blessthefall, you will love their sound. All of their music can be found on itunes, Youtube and Spotify.

Here is a look at their three biggest hits on spotify:

  • “Absent Minds”- a classic post hardcore sound with Nash’s melodic voice really works with the guitar and drums. The drum beat really is what makes the song, in my opinion.
  • “Golden Ratio”- This was the first song I heard by them and enjoyed the music video as well. This was the song that made me want to do an artist spotlight on them because I believe their music has potential. Nash’s voice really is shown off in this song and it shows his vocal range.
  • “Alone”- On Spotify, this is their most popular and most played song. I understand why it is. This was my favorite song out of all the ones I listened to. The lyrics have a beautiful message and I absolutely love when a song has that. The chorus is very catchy and it is definitely a song people should add to their playlists.

Amongst Thieves is a band that I see emerging onto the post hardcore scene because their sound really fits with it. Check out their self-titled album and give their music a chance!

What to do at This Year’s Vans Warped Tour

For some of the fans attending this year’s Vans Warped Tour, this may be your first and last. When I was attending my first Warped Tour in 2011, I researched tips and what to expect when going to this huge rock festival. I am going to give my rendition of what to bring and what there is to do while you are at Warped.

There are some things that you do need to bring with you and these items will help you save some money at the end of the day.

  1. A water bottle. Bring a reusable water bottle because buying water from the vendors is very overpriced. There are water stations called the Cool Gear Hydration Stations where you can fill your bottle for free. Drinking water is super important because it is extremely hot and you will start to feel sick if you do not drink or eat.
  2. A small backpack. This will help you carry all your important items like your water bottle, phone, camera and money.
  3. Sunscreen. Make sure to bring sunscreen because the sun beats down on you all day. Do not make a mistake, like me, and forget to put it on or you will be filled with instant regret the next morning.
  4. Portable phone charger. Make sure to bring one that is fully charged so you can charge your phone throughout the day, that way you can take pictures and videos of your favorite bands.
  5. A small portable fan. This item is not completely necessary but I think it will be more beneficial at the end of the day. It is extremely hot outside and sometimes the shade is not good enough.
  6. Hat and/or sunglasses. I always wear a hat to Warped to keep the sun and sweat out of my face. It also protects my face somewhat from getting burnt. Sunglasses are also good to protect those eyes.
  7. Money. You absolutely need money if you are going to get food. Make sure to always eat and drink. It’s also nice to come home with your favorite band’s merchandise.
  8. Umbrella or poncho. Warped Tour goes on rain or shine, if you do not like getting wet, bring these.
  9. Your ticket. Most important thing to have with you. I do not think an explanation is necessary.

When you first walk into your venue, you are going to feel overwhelmed and amazed. It is an amazing experience no matter how many times you have been.

The first and foremost thing you need to do when you walk in, is to walk over to the Vans tent and look up at the huge inflatable schedule. Write down the stages and set times that your favorite bands are playing. They do sell schedules on paper, this is something I actually purchase, and you have the entire lineup with you throughout the day.

Vans Warped Tour has many different things for you to do other than listening to the bands, even though that is the best part.

  • When you are hungry, check out the many food vendors all around the venue. They are awesome because we all know that the best food is food from festivals and carnivals. Slushies and alcoholic beverages are also served, but make sure to be of age and not drink too much alcohol in fear of dehydration.
  • Tents are all over Warped and this is where you’ll find some cool gear and possibly help out a good cause.
    • Get merch from your favorite bands and brands.
    • Check out non-profits tents and help support a good cause. This is actually one of my goals this year.
    • Some tents have games and activities for you to play, like the truth campaign tent.
  • It is important to listen carefully to bands on stage and see when and where they might be signing autographs. Sometimes their merch tents will have deals that if you buy an item, you get a wristband to meet them.
  • Make a visit to the local and Full Sail stages, if that is still its name, and discover new artists and bands. You can also discover new musicians by visiting record label tents.
  • If you are hot and sweaty, which you will be, find a shady spot and listen to some tunes. If sitting in the shade is not enough, there is a slip and slide for you to play on and cool off.

The Vans Warped Tour has been one of the best things I have ever got to experience and it is going to be really hard to say goodbye. Make every moment of this final Warped Tour and enjoy one of the best events you will ever attend.

Twelve Oaks Shopping Haul

A couple of months ago, my siblings and I came up with a goal to go shopping in the major malls that are near us in Michigan. This past Tuesday, it was our turn to shop at Twelve Oaks Mall. We saved up some of our money and decided to buy some goodies. I didn’t buy a huge amount of items, because Sephora is not cheap. Here are some of the items I purchased and love:

The Sephora, that I usually get to attend, is most likely located in a Kohls or JcPenney. There is nothing wrong with that, but I was taken aback by the huge selection of product at this location.

  • Daisy Dream in Twinkle by Marc Jacobs– I have been wanting Daisy perfume for the longest time and I was just won over by this scent instead. This was by big splurge item, but I know it will last me quite awhile. The purple packaging and the cute little flowers make it so much more likeable. Price: $84
  • Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray– My favorite part about Sephora’s and Ulta’s are the little section with travel items because I can get small high end products for cheap. Yes you get less product but it saves money and the product goes a long way. I have always been a fan of this setting spray and usually buy the smaller size, so I was happy to see it again. Price: $15
  • Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Nude Lip– This was also in that same travel section and this is a collection of high end nude lip products. In the lip kit, you get five tester lippies and one full size lippie. The brands included are Urban Decay, Buxom, Nars, Smashbox, Hourglass and Tarte. I wish this kit included more matte nudes, but it came with a lot of glosses. The Buxom nude gloss is what I am most excited for because the pigment and creaminess of the gloss is really pretty. Price: $28
  • Too Faced Hangover Face Primer Another travel size item, but way bigger than the sample they give you in glam bags. This is probably my favorite face primer because it does not way your face down, like some of them can. A little goes a long way, so I know this size will last me awhile. Price: $15
  • Kat Von D Tattoo Liner– This was a product I debated getting because it is quite pricey and I try to save money on items like eyeliner. I decided to purchase it because I saved up the money, and I have heard so many positive things about this liner. I always have the issue of my liner transferring to my lid and several people have told me that this liner does not do that. I am super excited to try this and get my hands on it. Price: $20

Hot Topic

I was so excited to finally go to a Hot Topic that was not going to be extremely small and would have a larger selection. It was awesome and if I had more money, I would have bought so much more. I only got four t-shirts so I am going to just link them.

Overall, my siblings and I had a wonderful time shopping and hanging out for the day. We also made a stop at Petland and made friends with a Walrus puppy. Next stop will be Briarwood Mall!

A Look at Plus Size Clothing Retailers

A recent trend, that I am glad to see happening, is the influx of plus size sections for women in clothing retailers. Women come in all shapes and sizes, and for the longest time stores were catering to one shape of woman. I always had the hardest time finding clothes that would fit my bust size. Shirts would fit my waist and everything else, besides the bust area. Recently, I have not had an issue finding clothes catering to that part of my body.

There are five retailers in particular that I have grown fond of, and hopefully you all can find something just right for you.

Rue 21

This is by far my favorite retailer to find plus size clothing because of the great prices. Rue 21 is really great about having sales every week and the clearance section is always full with cute little gems that may only cost you $3.

In store, it is not as easy to find the bigger sizes. You really have to look on the racks for the size you are looking for, but it does not always go to the highest size. Their entire plus size stock can be found on their website, with even some online exclusives. Each section of clothing has a sizing chart that will help you decide what is going to fit, even females with bigger bust sizes. They even have a selection of wide-width shoes, which I thought was a nice attraction, if you happen to be a woman with wider feet.

  • Pant and jean sizes range from 14-28
  • Top sizes range from 1x to 3x

Forever 21

When you walk into a Forever 21, you are able to walk to the specific section for plus size clothing and it is a nice size with several pieces to choose from. All of women’s clothing can also be found on their website as well. Their prices can get somewhat high, but they can be comparable to Rue 21’s. There are other retailers that actually charge more than Forever 21 does, which will be seen in this post.

The website also equips you with a sizing chart that explains what will fit you. I think their sizes run a little smaller than other retailers, but it still caters to a plus size market. Forever 21 has a huge selection of options in clothing like rompers, intimates, active wear and swim.

  • Top sizes range from 0x to 3x.
  • Pant sizes range from 12 to 22.

A few years ago, DEB use to be a massive retailer that had stores all over the country. Unfortunately, the company had to close their stores but this retailer can still be found online. DEB was once a store that catered to women of all sizes, but now you can only find plus sizes on their website.

Their website had some nice resources while you are shopping on the website. There is, of course, a sizing chart but this size chart comes with a set of instructions for measuring different parts of your body properly. They also match other items to go with whatever you are looking at and make sure your outfit is on point. DEB also features a decently sized and well priced clearance section, because their prices run similar to Forever 21’s.

  • Top sizes range from 1x to 3x
  • Pant and jean sizes range from 14 to 24

Torrid has been a well known and popular plus size clothing retailer. It is the sister store of Hot Topic, which also sells plus sizes now, but I digress.Torrid’s can be found in malls and they sell items on their website.

I have been in and out of their stores and have always loved some of the pieces they sell, but the prices are a little high for me. One day I will buy something from there, because they have cute clothing. Jeans run a little high in price, averaging about $75.

  • Top sizes range from M/L to 6x, but they have their own sizing terms.
  • Pant and jean sizes range from 10 to 30, giving a better range of sizes for plus size women.

Old Navy

When my bust size started to increase, Old Navy was the store that I was able to find shirts that would fit over my chest. I did have a difficult time finding the right sizes because plus sizes were always limited in stores. That still is an issue to this day. You really have to look hard for a 1x and that is usually the highest they go in store.

Their website has more options for women and it is easier to find the perfect piece of clothing for you. They allow you to shop by your particular body shape, so you can find clothing that will flatter your body type.

A big reason why I do not go to Old Navy as much as I use to is because their prices went up dramatically in the past few years. Jeans are roughly $50, which is not too bad comparing it to Torrid. Tops also are up there in price, averaging about $40.

  • Tops sizes range from 1x to 4x, if you are shopping online.
  • Pant and jean sizes range from 16 to 30, but I think the highest in store you can find is 18.

Many other clothing retailers exist in catering to plus size women, but these happen to be ones I admire at the moment. I am looking forward to seeing, trying and featuring newer retailers.

It is important to note that there are many President’s Day sales going on, so it may be a good day to do some shopping.

2018 Vans Warped Tour Lineup Picks

When I was eighteen years old, I was able to attend my first Vans Warped Tour. It was one of the most magical things that I got to experience and I am glad to call that my first concert experience. In 2016, I had the privilege of attending my second Warped Tour and it was probably the best lineup that I was able to witness.

Kevin Lyman, the creator of the Vans Warped Tour, announce that 2018 would be the last year the tour would be held. It is the largest and longest running traveling music festival in North America. Lyman created the festival in 1995, but it was in 1996 that punk music was featured and Vans became the main sponsor. Although many other genres are featured at Warped, I mainly go for the pop punk bands and just the overall experience.

Warped Tour became platform that launched the careers of popular bands and they would not be where they are today if not for the tour. Blink-182, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Paramore can thank Vans Warped Tour for the huge success.

On March 1st, the official and last tour lineup will be announced and it has got me thinking as to what bands I would like to see. Since 2018 is going to be the last year, there need to be a mix of old school and new school pop punk bands. I am hoping that the more popular bands will join the tour to say a proper goodbye to something that launched their careers.

Here are a list of my picks for bands I would like to see at the final Vans Warped Tour:

I know that most of these picks are wishful thinking, but I think featuring a mix of the old and new is a great way to say goodbye to a tour that has impacted a lot of people’s lives. Fans have adored this tour, and as one of those fans, I am going to miss it dearly.

On March 1st, watch for an article reacting to the official lineup and will be tweeting as much as I can during the announcement on the Pop Punk Princess twitter account.

Welcome to Pop Punk Princess!

Pop Punk Princess is a beauty and music blog that has been two years in the making, and I am very excited to say that it can finally begin. In college, I was always told by my professors that in order to have a successful blog, you need to have a niche. I always had a difficult time finding one that would please my professors, and it was something I always found really difficult. Then it came to me, after playing with my makeup and listening to State Champs, that I finally found my niche. A beauty blog focusing on fashion and beauty and pop punk music. I know it sounds like an odd pairing but I know there are other women like me and I know there are men who love this music just as much as I do.

The purpose of this first post is to explain what type of things you will be able to find on here. Everything will be as neatly organized as it can be, because then I will go crazy. Organization is key to a nice flowing website.

This is first and foremost a blog dedicated to pop punk music and beauty. In the music tab, you will find posts reviewing albums of artists related to the genre that this blog is dedicated to. Reviewing albums is one of my favorite things to do and I cannot wait to get back into that groove. I will have a band spotlight that will highlight an up and coming band or even one that is popular in this music scene. Any upcoming events or big breaking news stories that occur in our music community, will also be featured.

Vinyl records are making its way back to popularity and I am starting a collection of my own. Unboxing is another popular trend among the online community, so when I get a new vinyl, I will definitely want to talk about it.

Beauty and Fashion

Makeup is a huge hobbie and passion of mine, and over the years I started to learn more and more about it. I am not a makeup artist or have attended any classes regarding makeup. Makeup is something I taught myself at a really young age. I do not know everything about it, but I do have some knowledge I would like to share.

This blog will focus more on an affordable route, in which I will spotlight brands that cater to women and men who cannot always afford higher end makeup brands. There will be reviews on newly released products from drugstore brands, affordable brands and high end brands (if I decide to splurge). Nothing will be sponsored from any cosmetic company (especially since this is a new beauty blog), but their products will be reviewed because there is a high demand for it or because it is an interesting product.

Lately, I have been seeing more punk and emo clothing brands that I cannot wait to get my hands on. Putting outfits together, while still trying to remain affordable, will be another thing that can be seen on here. Any makeup looks, that I myself create, will be featured on here and I will try my best to explain them.

Opinion and Popular Culture

Every now and then, I like stating my opinions on things that I find important or what may seem to be taboo. New perspectives on certain topics are a great way to open the minds of those who really have not thought about the other side of things.

Pop culture is another guilty pleasure. If I find something cool or have watched something that I find intriguing, I am going to talk about it.

Articles and blog posts will be posted on a frequent basis. The goal is to have something up every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. One day might have just one post and another might have five. Posts will vary in length as well. Do not always expect a novel. I do not want to torture people that much.

Information can also be found on the Twitter account and Facebook page of this website. Hopefully you all enjoy what you will be able to find on here and I am very excited to get this website started!
